Savona – Savona’s located on the shores of the Ligurian Sea, at the very top of Italy’s boot. Yachts and cruise liners bob in the narrow harbour, which juggles traditional architecture with modern waterside apartments. The city itself boasts a bumper crop of historic landmarks, from the 16th-century Priamar Fortress to the stunning Sistine Chapel – a frescoed mausoleum with a famous namesake in Vatican City.
Olbia – The busy port city of Olbia is the gateway to Sardinia. Venture outside the city and you’ll discover a coastline patched together with sandy beaches, virgin coves and towns that alternate between busy urban centres and pretty Medieval masterpieces. The National Archaeological Museum of Olbia is stocked with artefacts left behind by the Romans and the even older Nuraghic civilisation.
Calvi – There’s no better way to arrive in Calvi than by cruise ship. As you pull into the iconic harbour, you’ll be greeted by its towering citadel. Beneath the soaring peaks of the Monte Cinto, this 15th-century outpost keeps watch over the whole town. Look beyond it, and you’ll discover a stylish holiday playground that’s a magnet for the yacht-owning super-rich. Cue designer boutiques, trendy seafood restaurants, and a four-mile stretch of glistening white sand.
Toulon – Fusing French Riviera glam with the feel of a traditional old town, Toulon is your gorgeous gateway to the Côte d’Azur. Follow the sound of popping corks and clinking champagne flutes to über-stylish St-Tropez, a long-time glitterati favourite. Venture into Aix en Provence and find out about its dual identity. This place is known as the Town of Water thanks to its fountains and the Town of Art because of its many museums.
Tarragona – You get a real mix of laid-back beach life and ancient history in Tarragona. The Catalonian city clusters along the coastline and lines up a handful of sandy beaches, a walled old town, and a collection of UNESCO-listed Roman ruins. Plus, Barcelona is within easy daytripping distance. There are a handful of Roman ruins scattered about the city, but the most impressive is the amphitheatre, which comes with views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Marella Discovery 2 is the sister ship to Marella Discovery, which means it shares most of the same top-notch facilities. These include an outdoor cinema, a rock climbing wall and a minigolf course. Not to mention the two pools – one indoor and one outdoor – plus, seven restaurants and a spa. And to top the lot, there are Broadway-style performances are on every night in the show lounge.
This grand hotel delivers a big pool and plenty of Gold entertainment – expect cabaret and comedy.
This place has a 6-acre garden filled with palms and umbrella pines, where you’ll find the huge pool. It’s hot on entertainment – there are gala dinners, cabaret shows and professional singers performing all week.
It’s less than 10 minutes’ walk to the winding sandy beach. Ca’n Picafort itself, meanwhile, is a 25-minute stroll along the prom.
